Spondylitis is a term related to the "wear andtear" of the body which occurs more commonly in old age. Spondylitis isa progressive condition that occurs due to the inflammation of the vertebra.This causes pain and stiffness around the cervical region of the neck, shoulderand lower spine. One distinct feature of Spondylitis is a stinging pain thatflows down towards the lower back and upper buttock area. Ankylosing spondylitis is an arthritic condition that affects thespine. It is also a systemic disease that can affect other tissues throughoutthe body and cause injury and pain in the other areas as well.
* Cervical Spondylosis (Arthritis of the Neck)
Spondylosis is the degeneration of the vertebrae. Headachewith neck and shoulder pain is a common indication of Cervical Spondylosis. Thewearing of the cartilage results in the rubbing of bones against each other.With this going on, the body responds by growing new bones for vertebral support. These new abnormal growths are called "spurs" (Osteophytes).But they constrict the space of the nerves to pass through and causecompression. This condition is called SpinalStenosis.
People with long backs and thick neck or those with ahump at the back are also seen to develop Cervical Spondylosis at a laterstage. Apart from pain, Spondylosis patients may also suffer from numbness orloss of sensation, loss of balance and tinnitus (ringing in the ears).Unfortunately, a good 85% of the population gets affected by this condition asthey cross their 60s. Out of this, women are of a higher proportion.
Though surgery is one of the treatment modalities,lifestyle modifications can help to reduce pain and give the patient a betterquality of life.
* Fibromyalgia and Myo-fascial Pain
These are conditions characterized by pain in the muscles in different points of thebody. These conditions are associated with morning stiffness, disturbed sleep,and a feeling of swelling. The sufferer has clear trigger points which aretender and when palpated produce the typical pain. Both are syndromes (a groupof symptoms) and not a disease. While they are not dangerous, they can hamperthe quality of life in the sufferer.
* Herniated Disc
In some people, symptoms like severe back pain, leg pain, or weakness of the lowerextremity muscles are traced to a herniated disc. When the cushion that sitsbetween the spinal vertebra is pushed outside its normal position, you have aherniated disc. This can occur as a result of rupture or bulging due to injury,disease, or deterioration. The spinal disc when pushed out irritates the spinalnerves that lay very close to the edge of these spinal discs causing severepain.
The spinal disc is but a soft cushion that sits between each vertebra of thespine. They act as shock absorbers giving the spine both rigidity and theneeded flexibility. The spinal disc becomes more rigid with age. In a youngindividual, the disc is soft and elastic, but the disc gradually loses itselasticity as he or she ages and becomes more vulnerable to injury.
Herniated disc can occur to anyone. It is, however, seen more commonly in people between theages of 35 to 45 who perform heavy manual labour or drive motor vehicles forlong periods of time. The non-surgical treatment of herniated discincludes pain killers, anti-inflammatory, rest and recommended exercises. Ifthe condition does not improve or worsens with treatment, surgery is the only refuge.
Allopathy treats these conditions with pain killers and fails to address the root of the problem.Consumption of pain killers can interfere with different physiological processes. When stopped suddenly these drugs can cause severe health issues like digestive problems, depression and metabolic changes in the user.
Massage, stretching exercises and therapy cannot yield sustained relief.
Ayurveda sees back pain as a vitiation of Vata. Vata is one of the three doshas or body constitutions in the ancient science of Ayurveda. In Ayurveda, there is no pain without Vata. And this holistic approach concentrates on pacifying the vitiated Dosha for pain relief and for the rejuvenation of the affected tissues.
Ayurveda does not suppress the problem but addresses it and eradicates it from the root level. Hence, the treatment is a combination of medications, diet modifications, exercise and yoga. The treatment of cervical spondylosis and herniated disc comprises of the use of herbal formulations to arrest the degenerative process.
